History of Benue State Polytechnic

The Edict No. 13 of August 1976, issued by the military administration of Col. Abdulahi Shelleng, created the Benue State Polytechnic. It was invariably founded only a year after Benue State was established. As a young state, there was a need to train the required manpower for its socio-economic and technological take-off. Murtala College of Arts, Science, and Technology was the institution’s last name. It was first founded in Makurdi.

It began in February 1977 with the admission of 250 students, primarily for preparatory courses for university entrance. In the 1977/1978 academic year, 143 students enrolled in the only three departments that offered Agriculture, Fine & Applied Arts, Accountancy, Business Administration, Executive Secretaryship, and Marketing.

The curricula were later improved and updated, and the number of Academic Departments was increased. The Edict No. 13 of August 1st, 1976, which created the institution under the name “Murtala College of Arts, Science, and Technology” was amended under the Aper Aku-led Civilian Administration. As a result of the amended statute, which was signed on October 3, 1983, the institution was given a new name: “Benue State Polytechnic.”

Following an order to move the then School of Basic Studies from Ugbokolo to Makurdi, the polytechnic was re-located to Ugbokolo in 1981. The institution had to work on two campuses between 1981 and 1988: one in Makurdi and the other in Ugbokolo. While the Makurdi campus offered all science, technology, and engineering courses, the Ugbokolo campus offered courses in the arts, business administration and management studies, legal studies, catering, and hotel management. Following the relocation of the Departments that were left behind, the polytechnic is now fully operational at Ugbokolo.

Academic programmes in Benue State Polytechnic operate in seven schools, namely: School of Administrative and Vocational Studies, School of Technology, School of Art, Design & Printing, School of Engineering, School of General and Preliminary Studies, School of Business and Management Studies, and School of Environmental Studies.
