Colleges of education lecturers vow to join ongoing ASUU strike, blasts FG

Two days after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) began a one-month nationwide warning strike, the Lecturers across the country’s colleges of education have vowed to join the University Lecturers in the strike currently underway.

The lecturers, who are organized under the auspices of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), have stated that they will convene a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in the coming weeks to take necessary actions as permitted by the Trade Union Act if the government fails to act.

Smart Olugbeko, the President of the COEASU, said that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has a propensity for crises in the education sector, as seen by the administration’s nonchalant attitude toward agreements with unions.

According to Olugbeko, some of their grievances include: renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement, the crises produced by IPPIS, the release of the N15 billion Revitalisation Fund, among other things. Olugbeko believes that the growth of colleges of education in Nigeria is crucial.
