All You Need to Know about Port Harcourt Polytechnic Rumuola

Port Harcourt Polytechnic is a state-owned tertiary institution situated in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The institution is funded and managed by the Government of Rivers State.

The Rivers State School of Basic Studies was established on April 19, 1984, when the state’s military governor, Police Commissioner Fidelis Oyakhilome, signed an edict establishing the school. When the school began functioning as a tertiary institution affiliated with the University of Ibadan in November 1987, the edict went into effect. Later, for pre-degree IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) courses, the institution was affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.

The Rivers State College of Arts and Science was restructured in 1999 with the mandate to deliver courses leading to the award of diplomas and certificates in several disciplines. This is in addition to school certificates and the IJMB. Arts, Science, and Preliminary Studies, and the Institute of Continuing Education, were the three schools at the institution.

Rivers State College of Arts and Science was given permission to offer courses leading to the award of the National Diploma (ND) by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 2006. Rivers State College of Arts and Science was thus converted into a polytechnic funded by the Rivers State government and overseen by the NBTE.  THE Rivers State House of Assembly passed a bill in June 2016, which renamed the institution to Port Harcourt Polytechnic.

Port Harcourt Polytechnic, also known as Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, has qualified and highly-trained teaching and non-teaching staff.

The institution is comprised of the following schools: School of Environmental Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Engineering Technology, School of Management Sciences, and School of Science and Technology.
