Can you study for a UK master’s with a second-class lower degree?

Quick answer: A Nigerian 2:2 can meet the academic minimum for some UK master’s courses, but there is no UK-wide rule that every course accepts it. First check how the university reads Nigerian grades, then open the exact 2027 course page for its subject and experience requirements. A course that says “may consider” a 2:2 is different from one whose published minimum is 2:2.

The examples below use official 2027 course pages and Nigeria-specific admissions guidance, checked 9 October 2026. They illustrate how to shortlist and ask a precise question; they are not guaranteed offers or a ranked list of universities.

Read the country rule and the course rule together

Sheffield’s Nigeria page says applicants usually need a four-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant subject, with a degree programme accredited by Nigeria’s National Universities Commission. It maps a Nigerian Second Class Lower to a UK 2:2, and lists GPA examples for 4.0, 5.0 and 7.0 scales. It also says most postgraduate courses require 2:1, while some consider 2:2. Do not copy Sheffield’s GPA conversion into another university’s form: report the grading scale on your actual transcript and follow that university’s instructions.

Leeds’ Nigeria page gives a simple classification match: where a course asks for a 2:2, it lists a Nigerian 2:2; where it asks for a 2:1, it lists a Nigerian 2:1. The course can add subject, module or other requirements. This is why a country page alone cannot tell you whether a particular MSc is a fit.

Compare four actual 2027 course decisions

Selected 2027-entry examples, checked 9 October 2026
Course and official pagePublished academic ruleWhat a 2:2 holder must still check
Sheffield, Biological and Bioprocess Engineering MScMinimum 2:2 honours degree in a relevant subject; the page names engineering, science and technology disciplines.Degree recognition and subject fit under the Nigeria guidance. A minimum is not an admission promise.
Leeds, Materials Science and Engineering MSc2:2 honours degree in engineering, science, mathematics or a related subject.Whether your particular Nigerian qualification and modules satisfy the course’s subject rule.
Manchester, Master of Public Health (on campus)Normally an upper second; the course may consider a lower second with significant relevant research or professional experience, giving three or more years in a public-health team as an example. This is a conditional consideration route, not a 2:2 minimum. Document the experience and ask admissions how to present it.
Manchester, Statistics MScNormally a good upper second or first in mathematics or a subject with substantial mathematical content, plus specified mathematics and statistics preparation.Do not spend on this application assuming every Manchester course shares the same 2:2 flexibility.

These examples show three different answers: a stated 2:2 minimum, a 2:1 course with a defined experience-based possibility, and a higher-grade course with subject prerequisites. Recheck the live course page for the entry year you want. Part-time, distance-learning and professional courses can have different attendance, visa and career implications; a lower entry threshold alone does not make them substitutes for your intended course.

A worked shortlist decision

Fictional example: Ada has a Nigerian BEng with Second Class Lower and wants a 2027 materials-related master’s. She records her university, award title, classification and transcript scale. Leeds’ Materials Science and Engineering MSc states a 2:2 minimum in a relevant field, so she marks it “academic minimum may fit” and checks modules and tuition before applying. Sheffield’s engineering MSc also states a 2:2 minimum, but she checks its recognised-degree and subject rules. Manchester’s on-campus MPH is unrelated to her goal and its possible 2:2 route requires substantial public-health experience; she does not add it merely to increase her list. She keeps each decision tied to a course page, not a generic “universities accepting 2:2” list.

Ask admissions before paying

Before paying a fee, ask admissions: “I hold a [degree] from [Nigerian university], awarded with Second Class Lower on a [scale] transcript. I completed [relevant modules or experience]. For the [exact course] starting in [year], does this meet the academic minimum or qualify for individual consideration? Are there subject, accreditation or document requirements I should check first?” Provide factual details; do not relabel your degree as a UK award yourself.

Strengthen the evidence you can control

Use your academic CV and statement of purpose to show relevant modules, projects and work outcomes. Prepare a readable transcript so the assessor can see the preparation behind your overall grade. Do not invent experience or assume a strong statement overrides a mandatory threshold.

Check funding separately

Admission and funding are separate decisions. A master’s course may consider a 2:2 while its scholarship requires a 2:1 or other evidence. Check the official award rules using our scholarship directory, then use the programme comparison worksheet and application-budget guide to narrow the list. If your qualification is an HND rather than a bachelor’s degree, start with our HND entry-routes guide instead.
