Can You Apply for a UK Master’s with a Nigerian HND? Check the Route First

Quick answer: a Nigerian Higher National Diploma (HND) does not have one UK master’s admissions rule. Some universities ask for an HND plus a postgraduate diploma, some consider relevant experience on selected courses, and others offer a Graduate Diploma, pre-master’s or bachelor’s top-up route instead of direct master’s entry. The named course’s admissions team decides whether your qualifications meet its requirements.

The expensive mistake is reading “HND accepted” on a university country page without checking which level it describes. An HND might qualify you for year three of a bachelor’s degree but not an MSc at the same university. Use the official examples below to identify the route before you pay an application fee.

Four different outcomes on official university pages

Official example What the page says Question to ask
Westminster Typical master’s entry routes include an HND plus a postgraduate diploma with high grades. Will my specific PGD, grades and subject meet this course’s rule?
UWE Bristol It cannot consider HND holders for most master’s programmes. Relevant work experience may be considered for some Art and Health courses. Is my named course one of the exceptions, and what evidence is needed?
Queen Mary Selected HNDs may qualify for its Graduate Diploma or pre-master’s route. Its standard postgraduate taught section lists bachelor’s degrees. Which Graduate Diploma leads toward my target master’s, and what are its progression conditions?
Sheffield Hallam Its Nigeria page places HND applicants in consideration for year three of an undergraduate degree. A separate postgraduate line mentions a “Higher Diploma” plus significant relevant work experience. Does admissions treat my HND as the qualification named in the postgraduate line, or is an undergraduate top-up the correct route?

These are examples, not a list of universities guaranteed to admit HND holders. The university pages themselves say course requirements can differ. A postgraduate diploma, a pre-master’s and a bachelor’s top-up are different awards with different costs and progression rules; do not treat them as interchangeable.

If you have an HND alone

Start by checking the course’s academic entry requirements and the university’s Nigeria page together. Westminster’s published typical HND route also requires a postgraduate diploma with high grades, so an HND alone does not satisfy that stated route. Queen Mary’s page puts an HND under its Graduate Diploma section, not its standard direct-entry master’s qualifications. UWE’s exceptions are limited to some courses and relevant experience. Sheffield Hallam distinguishes HND consideration for advanced undergraduate entry from postgraduate study.

A top-up is not simply an administrative conversion of an HND into a degree. It is an undergraduate study route for which the university must confirm your entry year, credits, length, fees and final award. A pre-master’s or Graduate Diploma likewise needs an explicit progression rule: which master’s programme, minimum marks, English requirement and whether progression is conditional or guaranteed. Get these in writing before choosing the route.

If you also have a PGD or relevant work experience

Tell admissions the exact award name, awarding institution, grade and subject of your postgraduate diploma. Westminster names an HND plus a PGD with high grades as a typical route, but course-specific subject and grade rules still apply. Do not assume any training certificate counts as a PGD.

Relevant employment can matter for a named programme. UWE points HND holders with relevant work experience to some Art and Health courses for individual checking. Its statement is not a general work-experience waiver for every master’s. If a country page uses a different term, such as Sheffield Hallam’s “Higher Diploma”, ask admissions whether your Nigerian HND is covered rather than translating the term yourself.

A worked course check

Fictional example: Tobi has a Nigerian HND in business with Upper Credit and two years of business work experience. He wants a business MSc. He finds an article saying “HND accepted at Queen Mary”. On the official Queen Mary Nigeria page, the HND appears under Graduate Diploma entry, while the postgraduate taught section names bachelor’s degrees. Tobi should ask whether a specific Graduate Diploma can lead to his target MSc, the required progression grade and the combined cost. He should not submit a direct MSc application on the assumption that the two sections mean the same thing.

If Tobi later completes a PGD, he can separately check Westminster’s published HND-plus-PGD route against his target course. His work experience could matter for other programmes, but he must check each university’s wording. This example is a method, not an admission decision.

Subject: Nigerian HND eligibility for [exact master’s course], [intake year]

Hello Admissions Team, I am considering [exact course and intake]. I hold a Nigerian HND in [subject] from [institution], awarded in [year] with [grade]. I also hold [exact PGD, if any] and have [brief relevant experience, if any]. Does this profile meet the academic requirements for direct entry? If not, is there an approved top-up, Graduate Diploma or pre-master’s pathway for this course? Please confirm its entry conditions, progression requirements, total study length and where I can find the current fees. I can provide my transcripts and course details through your official process. Thank you.

Decision record before you apply

  1. Write down the exact course and intake; save its official entry-requirements link.
  2. Record whether the university places HND under direct master’s entry, a PGD-plus-HND route, a pathway, or undergraduate advanced entry.
  3. Ask how your awarding institution, HND grade, PGD and work experience will be assessed.
  4. For a pathway, confirm the award, progression marks, time, fees and any extra application.
  5. Check English evidence separately; HND eligibility does not automatically satisfy an English requirement.
  6. Only then compare the option with other courses and the full cost in our programme shortlisting worksheet and application budget.

Outside the UK, rules may differ again. For example, Sweden’s national admissions guidance for Nigeria names a four-year bachelor’s degree for general master’s eligibility and asks for HND records if they were counted toward that bachelor’s degree. That is not a statement that a standalone HND meets the general criterion.
