Quick answer: A Nigerian degree taught in English does not automatically remove every master’s English-test requirement. Universities set their own admission rules, and the UK Student visa has a separate evidence route. Check the exact course, your graduation date and what the university will record for your visa before paying for IELTS or assuming you can skip it.
This comparison uses current official postgraduate guidance from Oxford, Cambridge and UCL. It is a way to ask the right question, not a promise that a particular applicant will receive an exemption. The rules and course requirements can change.
Compare university admission policies
| Provider | What its policy says | Decision for a Nigerian graduate |
|---|---|---|
| Oxford | A test waiver may be requested for a full-time degree-level course of at least nine months, taught and assessed entirely in English, with a gap of no more than two academic years. The department decides after an offer. A separate professional-experience route has further conditions. | Check the degree dates and answer the waiver questions in the application. Do not describe a request as an approved waiver. |
| Cambridge | The portal estimates whether evidence is needed. Its usual no-test routes refer to nationality and education in its UKVI majority-English-speaking list, or a recent three-year equivalent degree from that list. Nigeria is not on the list shown on this page. | Do not assume a Nigerian degree alone meets Cambridge’s usual no-test route. Check the course and the portal’s decision. |
| UCL | One route is at least 12 months’ academic education leading to an awarded qualification in a country UCL counts as majority English-speaking, with English as the medium of instruction. The qualification must be recent. UCL’s education-country list includes Nigeria. | Check the award date, where all study took place, evidence of English instruction and the course’s required level. Nigerian nationality alone is not on UCL’s nationality-exemption list. |
WAEC, NECO and English-medium study can be different routes
Leeds’ Nigeria guidance lists WASSCE English at C6 among postgraduate evidence routes and says qualifying English-medium Nigerian study can remove the need for further tests: at least two years completing an undergraduate degree or one year completing a master’s. Northumbria’s Nigeria guidance typically accepts WAEC or NECO English at C6 for most courses but explicitly does not accept English-medium study alone as evidence. It warns that some professional and health courses have other restrictions. Check the exact course and the verification instructions before using any of these routes.
The words matter: Oxford describes a waiver request; Cambridge describes when test evidence is usually unnecessary; UCL offers an education-based evidence route. These are not the same decision. At UCL, a qualification used for that route must be awarded no more than two years before proposed enrolment, and study completed partly outside a qualifying country under transnational education requires a recognised test under its published rule. Read the current provider page for your own case.
Check the Student visa route separately
The UK government’s Student visa guidance does not list Nigerian nationality as an automatic exemption. It says an English-taught degree awarded outside the UK can be used through an Ecctis assessment. It also says a higher education provider sponsoring degree-level study can assess English itself to the required level. That is why a university may tell you it will record its assessment on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), rather than asking you to buy a separate visa English test. Ask the sponsor which route it will actually use; do not buy an Ecctis assessment solely because an article mentions it.
A university can still set an admission condition even where a visa evidence route exists. Conversely, an admission waiver should not be treated as a visa answer until the sponsor confirms its CAS process. If you are applying outside the UK, check that country’s immigration rules independently.
A worked decision before you book a test
Fictional example: Tobi earned a four-year Nigerian bachelor’s degree taught in English and wants a 2027 UK master’s. Tobi first opens each exact course page. For Oxford, Tobi checks the graduation-to-course gap and requests a waiver in the application if the published criteria fit; the department must still decide. For Cambridge, Tobi does not assume a Nigerian degree qualifies under the usual majority-English-country route and follows the portal’s evidence request. For UCL, Tobi checks whether the qualification was awarded within two years of proposed enrolment, whether all study was in Nigeria, and what proof of instruction is required. Tobi then asks the chosen sponsor how English ability will be recorded for the visa. One degree produces different tasks at different institutions.

Ask admissions about your exact evidence
For an enquiry, write: “I am applying to [course/intake]. My [degree] was awarded by [institution] on [date] after study in [country], with teaching and assessment in English. Does your current policy allow this qualification to satisfy the course’s English requirement, or may I request a waiver? What evidence and deadline apply? If I receive an offer, how will English ability be assessed for my CAS?” Attach only what the admissions office asks for.
