Sometimes, yes—but you still need the evidence your chosen university accepts. Some institutions assess an application using an interim or unofficial transcript. That does not mean every institution will accept a missing transcript, a statement of result or a promise to send documents later.
First identify what is actually pending: your final results, the transcript showing those results, or your degree certificate. These are different problems, and admissions needs to know which one applies.

Which document is missing?
Use this decision checklist to prepare your enquiry. The suggested action is a question to resolve, not an assurance that your application will be accepted.

Examples of what universities allow
Cambridge: its supporting-document guidance allows applicants who are currently studying to provide an interim or unofficial transcript. It requires a final transcript if an offer is made. This is permission to provide a current record, not permission to omit the record altogether.
Oxford: its transcript guidance permits an official interim or provisional transcript when final results are unavailable. It also explains when qualifying student-portal screenshots can be used. Follow its stated conditions rather than assuming any screenshot is sufficient.
Sweden: University Admissions describes a final-year route involving completed-semester transcripts, official confirmation of final-year enrolment and English evidence. Its guidance separately addresses graduates awaiting a diploma: they need a complete official transcript and appropriate university confirmation. These examples show that there are possible routes. They are not a list of universities guaranteed to accept your qualification or grant an extension. Check your particular programme, application cycle and document deadline.
Can a statement of result replace the transcript?
Do not assume that it can. A statement of result and a detailed academic record may provide different information. Our document comparison guide explains their different purposes. Describe exactly what your document shows when you ask admissions: your qualification, completion date, final classification, individual courses and grades, or only some of these.
The title printed on the document does not settle whether the receiving institution will accept it for a particular requirement. Request written clarification about the actual document you have. Do not rename the file “official transcript” to make it appear to be a different document.
If the issue is a delayed certificate, say that clearly. Asking “Can I apply without my transcript?” when you already have a complete transcript but lack a certificate can lead to an answer that does not solve your problem.
Send admissions a specific question before the deadline
Use the official postgraduate admissions contact or enquiry form for your programme. Include your application reference if you have started an application. The following email is a template to adapt, not a document to upload in place of your transcript.
Subject: Pending academic document — [programme and intake]
Dear Admissions Team,
I am applying for [programme] for [intake]. I studied/am studying [degree] at [Nigerian university]. My application reference is [reference, if available].
My situation is [still studying / final results available but transcript pending / transcript available but degree certificate pending]. I currently have [exact document name], issued by [office], showing [what information it contains].
I have read [official requirements link], but I am unsure whether this document meets the requirement at the application stage.
Could you confirm whether it can be used for assessment, how I should submit it, and the deadline and delivery method for any final replacement? If it cannot be accepted, is there another permitted route for my situation?

Keep the response with your application records. If an answer is unclear, ask one follow-up question identifying the unresolved point. An unanswered email is not approval to submit a substitute or miss a deadline.
A conditional offer still needs action
If an offer arrives, make a fresh checklist from its conditions. Record each outstanding document, who must issue it, how it must arrive and its deadline. Cambridge’s offer-management guidance, for example, directs offer holders to a Self-Service account where they can view conditions and provide evidence to meet them.
Continue chasing the final document while the application is being assessed. If your university’s expected issue date falls after the required deadline, contact admissions promptly with that information and ask about the available options. Do not treat a conditional offer as a waiver of the missing evidence.
