Round status checked on 22 October 2026: The 2027–28 Chevening and main Commonwealth Master’s application windows have closed. The comparisons below explain the application sequence; they are not an invitation to submit a late scholarship application. Check the scholarship directory for current route statuses and announced upcoming windows.
Quick answer: You can apply for some master’s scholarships before receiving a university offer. Others require an offer at a later stage, and some universities consider eligible applicants automatically through the course application. The scholarship’s rules for your entry year determine the order. A funding application does not submit a course application, and an admission offer is not a scholarship award.
For a Nigerian applicant, the useful question is not simply “scholarship or admission first?” It is: What must I submit now, what evidence must I supply later, and who sets each deadline? Compare the official scholarship page with the university’s course and offer instructions. Nominating agencies may add a separate stage.
Identify which application route applies
- No university offer at scholarship submission: apply for funding by its deadline, then pursue admission by the provider’s required stage. Check whether a nominator has extra rules.
- Offer required later: submit the funding application first if allowed, but apply to the university early enough to obtain the specified offer by the later deadline. Read whether “conditional” is acceptable and which conditions may remain.
- Automatic scholarship consideration: make the course application and supply the qualifications the university uses to assess the award. No separate scholarship form does not mean an award is guaranteed or that you can skip accepting the admission offer.
Use the official award page, current terms, country or nominator instructions and university offer letter together. If “offer” is not defined clearly, ask the provider whether a conditional offer qualifies at the relevant stage. Do not carry one scholarship’s rule across to another.
Three current examples show why the order differs
| Award | Offer needed when applying for funding? | Later requirement or separate action | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship | The CSC says a university offer is not required at the scholarship-application stage. | A nominating agency can set additional criteria and deadlines. The CSC strongly advises seeking university admission when applying or soon afterwards. Its 2027/28 programme page says applicants must use both CSC Central and the relevant nominator route; nomination is not an award. | Check your nominator’s current instructions, submit both required applications, and start the university process without waiting for the scholarship outcome. |
| Chevening 2027/28 | Its scholarship application names three eligible courses; you must apply to those universities separately. An admission offer is required later. | The 2027/28 timeline sets 17:00 BST on 8 July 2027 for evidence of an unconditional offer from one choice. Chevening’s course guidance allows a conditional offer only when the sole outstanding condition is financial, such as a deposit; other caveats are not covered by that exception. | Choose eligible courses, apply to the universities early, and track every condition against the Chevening offer deadline. |
| Reading Master’s Excellence Scholarship 2027/28 | No separate scholarship application is needed for the published automatic-consideration route. | Reading assesses eligible international fee-paying master’s applicants from the information in their course application. The applicant must hold and accept an offer of study; the award is a tuition reduction, not a full-cost scholarship. Its page says February 2027 entrants follow the 2026/27 scheme instead. | Check course and fee-status eligibility, include undergraduate degree details in the course application, then inspect the admission offer for any award. |
The three routes have different submission systems and evidence stages. For Commonwealth, check the exact 2027/28 Nigerian application route. For Chevening, see the separate work-experience eligibility check. For Reading, confirm the award’s current terms and the course’s own requirements before treating automatic consideration as an expected discount.
Conditional and unconditional offers are different evidence
A conditional offer lists requirements still to be met, such as final results, English evidence or a deposit. An unconditional offer means the university has cleared its admission conditions, but you still need to follow acceptance, funding and enrolment instructions. Neither type of offer proves a scholarship application is complete.
Chevening’s financial-only exception is narrow: its course guidance says a conditional offer can be accepted if the only remaining condition is financial, such as a course deposit. It says there can be no further caveats, including a request to send original documents. Do not describe an offer with outstanding academic or English conditions as meeting that exception. Ask the scholarship provider and admissions office if the wording of your offer is unclear.
Build one timeline with separate rows
Copy this record into your application tracker for each course and award. Give every factual row an official link, the date checked, deadline with time zone, your status and next action:
- University course application and its documents or references.
- Scholarship form and supporting evidence.
- Nominating-agency application, if applicable.
- Deadline for an offer, and exactly which offer conditions may remain.
- University acceptance, deposit and funding-evidence deadlines.
- Expected scholarship result and response deadline.
- Who to contact if two dates conflict.
If a date is not announced, write “not yet announced” with the official page you will recheck. Do not reuse a previous year’s deadline as a current one. Use our reference-deadline guide when a referee’s part of the application has a separate cutoff.
Worked example: the course deposit is due before the award decision
Fictional example: Sade submits a Chevening application naming three eligible master’s courses and applies to the universities separately. One university later offers admission but asks for a tuition deposit before Sade knows the scholarship result. Sade records the deposit deadline and the exact remaining offer conditions. She checks whether the condition is financial only under Chevening’s published rule, then asks the university what it will do while funding is pending. She does not assume Chevening will pay an early deposit, that the university will extend the deadline, or that a payment would be refunded if funding fails.
Our deposit-before-scholarship guide compares published Leeds, UCL and Manchester routes for this problem. Follow your own university’s current policy and obtain any extension or waiver in writing before relying on it. The course offer, scholarship decision and eventual Student visa process are separate stages.
Enquiry template: “I hold an offer for [course/intake] with [conditions]. My [acceptance/deposit] deadline is [date], while [award] expects to decide on [date]. What options, if any, are available while I await that decision? Please confirm the evidence needed, refund rule and any revised deadline in writing.”
If funding and admission cannot align for the same intake, read our guide to deferring a master’s offer while seeking a scholarship. It separates a short deadline extension from moving your start date and explains why the funder must confirm its own timing rules.
Choose the next action, then check affordability
First classify the award’s route: offer not needed yet, offer required later, or automatic consideration through admission. Then identify the next deadline you control. Use the programme shortlisting worksheet to verify course fit and the scholarship coverage checklist to calculate what funding is actually confirmed. Do not pay a course deposit solely to keep an unfunded option alive without checking the full remaining cost and refund terms.
