Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship 2027/28 for Nigerians: nomination, documents and deadlines

Scholarship application · 2027/28 entry

Applications for the 2027/28 Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships are closed. The CSC deadline was 16:00 BST on Tuesday 20 October 2026—4 pm in Nigeria. The official CSC programme page confirms closure. This guide now records the application requirements for that completed window; it is not an invitation to submit a late application.

For applicants who submitted: retain your submitted application and follow your nominator’s instructions. The CSC says nominators put candidates forward by December 2026 and outcomes are expected by July 2027. Nomination is not an award. Continue checking university admission deadlines separately. Future application dates have not been inferred from this round.

This guide turns the published rules into a practical application check. It is for the one-year taught master’s scholarship beginning in September/October 2027, not the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship or a PhD award. It does not replace the official eligibility decision.

The two-track application: CSC and nominator

Submitting the form on CSC Central is only one track. The CSC also requires you to apply to a participating national agency or selected NGO/charitable nominator. Its national agency list names Nigeria’s Federal Scholarship Board. The board’s own selection steps and deadline may differ from the CSC’s; a nomination does not guarantee an award.

Important date trap: the Federal Ministry of Education currently has a 2026/27 notice online. That is a previous cycle. Do not copy its interview dates, document list or application deadline into a 2027/28 plan. If you intend to use the Federal Scholarship Board, look for its current notice or ask the board directly using contact details from the CSC agency list.

Check eligibility before starting the form

The CSC eligibility rules list Nigeria among eligible countries. You must also meet its citizenship or refugee-status and permanent-residence conditions, be available to start UK study in September 2027, and be unable to afford the study without the award. By September 2027 the normal academic route is at least a 2:1, or a 2:2 plus a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a master’s. The CSC describes a contextual route through a particular nominator for some disabled applicants; read that exception in full rather than assuming every 2:2 is eligible.

This award funds full-time, one-year taught master’s study and excludes MBA degrees. The CSC says it would not normally fund a second master’s; previous UK master’s study or a prior Commonwealth master’s award can make an applicant ineligible. Scholars commit to return home after the award. These conditions should be checked against your actual history before you invest time in essays or university fees.

Document requirements for the closed application round

For the CSC application, the supporting-document section requires a valid passport or national ID showing photo, birth date and citizenship; full transcripts for every higher-education qualification, including to-date records for current study; and at least two signed references in PDF, on institutional letterhead or in an email clearly showing the sender’s details. Missing transcript pages or required documents can make the application ineligible. If a to-date transcript is unavailable, the CSC asks for an explanation.

  • Identity: check that the document is valid and that the required details are visible.
  • Transcripts: count all pages and qualifications; ask your institution how long a request will take. Use our transcript request guide to find verified routes for selected Nigerian universities.
  • References: approach at least two referees early. Explain the CSC deadline and format; see our reference-request guide. The CSC says you collect and upload the PDFs yourself by its deadline.
  • Nominator: keep its separate evidence list. A CSC-complete folder may still be incomplete for the nominator.

Do not email documents to the CSC as a substitute for upload. Its page says applications and supporting files submitted outside CSC Central are not accepted, and submitted applications cannot be edited. Save drafts as you work and submit before the final hours; the CSC warns that the system may be busy near the deadline.

Plan the three course choices separately

The CSC advises applicants to list three suitable UK universities and courses in preference order, explain each choice, and take steps to apply for admission in advance. It says a selected applicant may lose the scholarship if a course place cannot be arranged. A scholarship form is therefore not a university application. For each proposed course, record the course link, academic and English requirements, admission deadline, application fee and whether it fits the CSC’s one-year taught-master’s rule. Our programme-shortlisting worksheet can help you compare them.

Worked planning example: if Course A closes on 15 October and the CSC closes on 20 October, the course application must be ready first. If the nominator closes on 12 October, that becomes the first scholarship deadline. These are illustrative dates except for the CSC’s published 20 October deadline; replace the course and nominator dates with verified dates for your own choices.

Application checklist retained for reference

  1. Can I point to the current CSC rule that makes me eligible, including the exact degree and residence conditions?
  2. Have I identified a participating nominator and its current, separate instructions?
  3. Are every transcript page and both references present in the required PDF format?
  4. Have I verified my three courses and their admission deadlines independently?
  5. Have I saved a copy of my answers and checked the final submission before clicking submit?

The award covers approved tuition and airfare, a stipend and specified support, but it does not remove every possible advance or family cost. Use our funding coverage checklist and scholarship directory and tracker to record gaps and next actions. The CSC says its application is free; be wary of anyone charging to submit it for you.

Application status and CSC programme guidance rechecked on 22 October 2026. Other source checks below were completed on 8 October 2026. The live CSC programme page, its nominator list, and the Ministry’s older 2026/27 notice underpin this guide. Rules and dates can change; confirm them with the official provider.
