A transcript, statement of result and degree certificate are not automatically interchangeable. For a master’s application abroad, match the document you have to the evidence the university requests: detailed course results, confirmation of the award, or both.
This guide concerns Nigerian higher-education documents. A secondary-school result slip is a different document. Names and formats also vary between institutions, so check what your own document contains instead of relying on its title alone.
What does each document show?
Academic transcript. A detailed record of courses and grades across your programme. Check that the required years, transferred credits and grading information are included.
Degree certificate. The formal award document identifying the qualification you earned. It does not normally replace the course-by-course record.
Statement of result or graduation statement. An institution-issued statement confirming results or completion, often used while the final certificate is unavailable. Check the wording: does it confirm an award, list results, or both?
For example, Sweden’s instructions for Nigerian master’s applicants request degree certificates or diplomas and transcripts of completed courses and grades. They treat these as separate requirements. That distinction is useful when checking your own application, but the receiving institution’s instructions decide what you must submit.
Can a statement of result replace a degree certificate?
Possibly, if the receiving institution explicitly accepts it for the relevant stage. Do not assume acceptance simply because the certificate has not been issued. Nuffic’s Nigeria guidance notes that the institution can send a graduation statement when a diploma is not yet available. This is useful background, not permission to substitute documents in every admissions system.
Ask two separate questions: can this statement be used to assess my application now, and must I supply the final certificate before enrolment? Record both answers. Acceptance at an initial stage may leave a later requirement outstanding.
Can a statement of result replace a transcript?
Do not assume it can. If the requirement is a complete course-by-course record, a statement showing only your final classification cannot supply those details. Even a document that lists marks may not satisfy the required issuing or delivery method.
The practical test is: does the document provide the information requested, and will admissions accept that particular document? If either answer is uncertain, obtain clarification. For requesting the record itself, use our Nigerian university transcript guide.
Check your documents in five minutes
- Write down the exact document names in the programme’s instructions.
- Open each document you hold and note the issuing office, qualification, award status and results shown.
- Compare the required study period with the years covered by your record.
- Check whether you upload a copy or the institution must send it directly.
- Mark missing evidence and ask about an accepted alternative before the deadline.
Keep a simple three-column note: “requested”, “available” and “action needed”. Do not label an item complete just because you have uploaded a file into its space.
Example: a certificate is delayed, but the transcript is available
In this fictional example, Ada has a complete transcript and a statement confirming completion. Her chosen programme asks for a transcript and degree certificate. She should check whether admissions accepts the statement temporarily for the certificate requirement, while following the separate transcript instructions. Uploading the same statement twice would not resolve both requirements.

Your guidance requests [exact document]. I completed [qualification] at [institution] in [year]. My final degree certificate is [status], and I currently hold [exact document title], which confirms [what it actually states].
Can this document meet the requirement at the application stage? If accepted temporarily, what final evidence will be needed and by when? Please also confirm the required submission method.

Does a statement of result have a universal expiry date?
Do not rely on a general expiry period quoted online. Check any validity wording on the document, ask the issuing institution about its policy, and confirm what the receiving programme accepts. Document validity and admissions acceptance are separate questions.
