Yes, some UK master’s courses consider applicants with a second-class lower degree. The useful question is whether a specific course accepts your qualification, subject background and experience for the year you want to start. A university name on a “2:2 accepted” list cannot answer all of those questions.
For a Nigerian applicant, check both the course entry requirements and the university’s guidance for Nigerian qualifications. This guide shows how to read those pages together and decide whether an application deserves your time.
Two official examples—and what they actually mean
Northumbria: MSc Business and Management, 2026/27. Normally a 2:2 honours degree or equivalent, or substantial experience in a business organisation. Check how your Nigerian qualification meets the equivalence requirement and whether this is your intended intake.
Leeds: Computer Science MSc, 2027. Standard entry is a 2:1 in a subject other than computer science, with mathematical competence. Applicants with a 2:2 and relevant experience or professional qualifications are encouraged to apply; an offer is not guaranteed. This is conditional consideration, not a blanket 2:2 entry rule. The subject restriction also matters.

Check the Nigerian qualification guidance
Northumbria’s Nigeria guidance includes a lower-second bachelor’s degree in its general postgraduate guidance. Leeds’ Nigeria guidance explains the Nigerian equivalent when a course requires a 2:2. A country page provides context; it does not replace a higher or more specific course requirement.
Record the classification exactly as it appears on your result and include the grading scale when requested. Do not convert a CGPA yourself and present the result as an official UK equivalent. If the page is unclear about your institution or award, ask admissions.
Screen each course before paying an application fee
- Entry year: are you reading the page for the intake you want?
- Academic threshold: is a 2:2 normal entry, exceptional consideration, or not mentioned?
- Subject fit: does the course require a related degree, particular modules or a different first degree?
- Additional evidence: is work experience required, and can you document relevant responsibilities?
- English evidence: which tests or qualifications are accepted for this course?
- Funding: can you meet the costs if a scholarship does not materialise?

An admissions enquiry you can adapt

I am considering [full course title] for [intake]. I hold a [degree title] from [university], awarded in [year], with a second-class lower classification and [CGPA and original scale, if relevant].
The course page states [brief requirement]. My relevant preparation includes [specific modules, project or work experience]. Does this qualification fall within the entry requirements, or would an individual assessment be needed? Please also let me know which documents you need to assess this question.

Keep the enquiry specific. “Will you accept me?” asks for a decision before the application has been assessed. A question about a named requirement is easier to answer. Save the response with the course link and the date.
Strengthen the evidence you can control
Use your academic CV to show relevant tasks and outcomes. In your statement of purpose, explain your preparation with concrete examples rather than repeatedly apologising for your classification. Do not invent experience or assume that an excellent statement overrides a mandatory threshold.
Prepare a readable university transcript so the assessor can see the modules behind the overall grade. If you are still awaiting it, check the guidance on applying with a final transcript pending.
Admission and scholarships are separate checks
A course that considers your degree class may still have scholarships with different selection criteria. Put the scholarship’s academic rules in a separate row of your planning sheet. An admission offer does not automatically mean funding, and an invitation to apply does not promise either outcome.
