Quick answer: Chevening’s current scholarship rules require at least 2,800 hours of work experience after completing your undergraduate degree, acquired over a minimum of two years. Eligible experience can include full-time or part-time employment, voluntary work, and paid or unpaid internships. Count the weeks and usual hours in each eligible period; do not assume “two calendar years since graduation” means you have 2,800 work hours.
This is a preparation guide for Nigerian applicants, not a decision on anyone’s eligibility. Chevening can revise a future cycle’s rules. Read its current eligibility page and scholarship work-experience page before submitting. This article concerns scholarships, not Chevening Fellowships, which have separate experience requirements.
Check the two separate tests
| Test | What to check in your record |
|---|---|
| Minimum hours | Do eligible periods add up to at least 2,800 hours? |
| Minimum span | Was the eligible experience acquired over at least two years after undergraduate completion? |
| Degree timing | Was undergraduate study completed by the date required for the current application cycle? |
| Experience type | Can each period be described accurately as employment, volunteering or a paid/unpaid internship? |
Chevening’s work-experience guidance says the current cycle requires an undergraduate completion date by October 2024. This is a cycle-specific example, not a date to reuse next year. Its eligibility page also says you must have finished undergraduate study at least two years before the application deadline, even if the certificate has not yet been issued. Check the exact date on the live cycle page.
Build a work-period record before entering the form
For each role, record the organisation, title or activity, start and end dates, actual weeks worked, usual hours per week, whether it began after degree completion, and a person or record that can verify it. Include part-time or voluntary work only when it fits the current Chevening categories. The application can take up to fifteen work periods, according to Chevening.
Chevening says its form calculates each entry as weeks worked × hours per week. Prepare your own estimate in the same way, then rely on the application’s calculation and current instructions when submitting. Do not count the same hours twice in overlapping jobs. Chevening lists duplicate entries, wrong week counts and unrealistic hours among common application errors.
Worked examples: hours are not the whole answer
Fictional example A: Amaka completed her degree before the relevant cut-off and worked 40 hours a week for 70 eligible weeks. Her estimate is 2,800 hours. But if those weeks were all within less than two years, she must check the separate minimum-span rule rather than assuming the hour total alone settles eligibility.
Fictional example B: Tunde has 45 weeks of paid work at 35 hours a week and 50 weeks of post-degree volunteering at 25 hours a week. His estimate is 1,575 + 1,250 = 2,825 hours. He still needs to verify the calendar span, exclude weeks before degree completion, and enter non-overlapping periods accurately. These examples illustrate the calculation; Chevening decides how its rules apply to a real application.
Does NYSC count?
Chevening’s current public categories include employment, voluntary work and internships, but the guidance checked for this article does not provide a blanket statement that every Nigerian NYSC service year counts. Record the actual post-degree duties, dates, organisation and hours. If your eligibility depends on that period, ask Chevening through its official help channel how to classify your particular service; do not label the entire year as full-time work without evidence of weeks and hours. Also check that it fits the minimum two-year span alongside your other eligible experience.
Three checks before you submit
- Separate pre-degree and post-degree dates. The current scholarship rule counts experience acquired after undergraduate completion; do not copy advice from old cycles without checking the live rule.
- Reconcile each period with payslips, contracts, service or volunteer records, or a supervisor who knows the work. Enter realistic hours and weeks; Chevening’s portal will calculate the total.
- Confirm the cycle’s degree cut-off and all other eligibility conditions. Meeting the work test alone does not make an applicant eligible: Chevening also requires eligible citizenship, three eligible UK course choices and other conditions on its official page.
Work experience need not perfectly match your chosen course, but Chevening says applicants making a career change should explain their transferable skills and the reason for that change. Keep eligibility arithmetic separate from the examples you choose to show leadership and impact.
Once the work record is sound, use our master’s programme shortlist to compare courses and our funding directory to compare Chevening with other awards. If you are below a requirement, plan for a later cycle rather than inflating an entry.
If shortlisted, use our Chevening interview preparation guide for Nigerian applicants to turn accurate experience records into clear examples, check interview documents and plan reference deadlines. The interview stage requires preparation beyond counting hours.
